Sam Walton founded Walmart in 1962 as a Discount Store, in Rogers, Arkansas. Though Walmart growth was slow, over the next five decades, the company grew from a small chain to an international corporation with more than 8,000 facilities around the globe. Estimates indicate that the company’s competent employees serve more than 200 million of customers on weekly basis (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2011). Sam advocated for the ’10-foot rule’ in case customers needed help with anything while in the store, ethics that Walmart still applies to date. Walmart officially became the largest grocery chain in 2002 and was listed first by the Fortune 500, a position it has held eight times leading to 2010 (Ferrell et al, 2011). The company has also been recognized for its efforts towards sustainable development. This paper briefly examines Walmart’s growth taking special concern on the company’s relationship with its stakeholders, the ethical issues that concern these stakeholders, as well the sustainability plans. The paper will identify the most important concepts or idea, recent updates concerning Walmart, and the knowledge gained from the analysis.
